Here is your complete list to getting ready for the big moving day.

Moving House Checklist

3 Months Before Moving Day

  1. Sort and purge, don’t waste time and energy taking things you won’t use with you.
  2. Hold a yard sale or drop off unwanted items in good condition at a local non-profit.
  3. Call moving companies or read rental van reviews.
  4. Reserve a moving vehicle and recruit a team of people to help.

Six Weeks Before Moving Day

  1. Pick up packing supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap and permanent markers.
  2. Take measurements of your new home so you can start mapping out where furniture will be placed.
  3. If you are currently in an apartment or condo association, make the Leasing office aware of your move-out date.
  4. Get a list of recommended doctors and dentists in your new community.
  5. Contact the local Chamber of Commerce to find out community information.
  6. Look up Census facts about your new city/town.

One Month Before Moving Day

  1. Begin packing items you won’t need right away. Be sure not to “over pack” a box so that it’s too heavy to lift.

Communicate and notify friends, family, and providers of your moving date and your forwarding address:

  1. Utilities: Oil, Electricity, Cable, Phone
  2. Magazines and Newspapers
  3. Pension Funds and Investment Firms
  4. Human Resources Department at Workplaces
  5. Associations and Clubs
  6. Voter Registration Office
  7. Department of Motor Vehicles
  8. School Records & Doctor’s Offices
  9. Doctor’s Offices

Banks

  1. Give a Forwarding Address
  2. Change Accounts if needed.
  3. Contact Credit Card Companies.

Insurance

  1. Discuss Changing Needs
  2. Notify Homeowner’s Agent
  3. Notify Auto Insurance Agent

Medical records

  1. Obtain Records from Doctors
  2. Obtain Records from Dentist
  3. Obtain Records from Veterinarian

Two Weeks Before Moving

  1. Arrange for time off from work and other duties during your moving dates.
  2. Confirm with family and friends helping you move.
  3. Confirm moving company.


Two Days Before Moving

  1. Defrost the freezer: Make sure to empty, clean, and defrost it at least 24 hours before moving day.
  2. Reconfirm with family and friends helping you move.
  3. Reconfirm moving company.
  4. Arrange payment for movers.
